Coastal Planting

Coastal Planting
Two days in an amazing location in the western suburbs, 300m away from the ocean to get that garden going. A few months ago, it was still covered with magnificent traveller’s palm (ravenala), but it was time for a change.
Instead, it has been decided to plant an array of coastal delights, 80 of them in total:
Summer scent (radermachera), Desert star (carissa), swamp lily (crinum pedunculatum), Lime wave (lomandra), Stephanotis floribunda (a climber), Emerald cascade (liriope), Dusty miller and a Frangipane. Some Dichondra’s seeds have been used in  between all of them as a ground covering.
Rob from total transformation set up the support line (marine grade) to get the Stephanotis climbing on the western wall. Great job mate.

Kerbside veggie patch; how to promote healthy lifestyle in your neighbourhood.

After an unsuccessful attempt to set up a veggie patch few months ago in our back garden, I was willing to make it right. Then I came across Raphael’s details and I said to myself; here we go, he is the one I need to call to set a proper veggie patch following permaculture principles.
After a quick chat, we finally met and put up a plan together.
I will:
-   Bring the water from the house to the kerb, passing the line underneath the footpath.
-  Build up the timber frame by up-cycling jarrah from the neighbourhood (I will use sienna sleepers for our next veggie patch).
-   Dig the hole, 30 cm deep.
Raph’ will:
-  Bring most of the elements to fill in: palm tree, horse manure, food scraps and lawn clippers. All of them being free as heading to waste.
- Bring and share all his experience to put everything together following permaculture principles.
I will:
-  Add my own compost, and some ground coffee offered kindly by our neighbour Jeremy, another gardener enthusiast, thanks buddy.
-   Set the dripping line and plant a variety of seeds in the following couple of weeks.

Brick work: fixing a step

Despite the recommendations received, I totally follow my instinct on that one, and decided to lay the bricks with some mortar, instead of using brickies sand.

It works, it prevents the bricks from moving downwards and as a bonus, it should last a lifetime.

Great job, and a nice step to get into that charming property.

Roof & Gutters

As we are just coming out of summer, now is the perfect time to raise the ladders up, to weep clean roofs and gutters.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and with dense canopies or not, falls will clog your gutters and pile up on your roofs.
Don’t hesitate and make the move before the rainy season starts.

Trim & Cut

To keep our lovely nature at bay, as to enjoy our garden and property, it’s essential to look after our trees, shrubs and hedges by giving them a good trim.
Depending on your choice and the type of plants growing in your backyard, it can be done either occasionally or on a more regular basis.
Be assured than I will follow your request, as I will take off only what is required to keep these beauties blossoming in the future, for you, your family and guests to enjoy.

Verge at low Cost

The video is a great example of how to turn a deserted section of verge into a nice kerbside using only wood chips and sweat.
By shovelling out consciously the weeds and the root systems associated, as racking the topsoil, it gives me confidence in not applying any weed mat.
Why? Because they usually break down after a little while bringing more micro-plastic in our environment. We don’t need this to occur anymore. Enough is enough. LoL.
It also reduces the initial cost associated for the refurbishment of the verge.
Food for thoughts: Perhaps we could imagine weed mat made from natural fibres; cotton, linen, hemp…
The work has been completed in July 2019, and for the last 9 months, I had only a hand full of weeds coming back. Which had been handpicked during my monthly visit to avoid propagations. So far so Good.
For $100 worth of chips, plus 3 hours of labour, it’s a great satisfaction. Good job Mate.
